Skill Benchmarks According to Employment Length

KUB Student Technical Crew employees are expected to know and replicate the following concepts and information depending on the student's length of employment with the Technical Crew.

One (1) Semester

Basic Equipment and Concepts

  1. Running cables
    • Safety
    • Aesthetics ("Make it look pretty")
    • Against walls
    • Parallel to electrical cables and at least 6 inches apart
    • Straight lines, 90 degree angles
    • At podiums
  2. Taping cables
  3. Wrapping cables
  4. Reading/interpreting building reports
  5. Reading/interpreting shift reports
  6. Basic setups
    • Neat and clean, put out keyboard/mouse, etc.
  7. Organizing computer carts
  8. Organizing cable storage
  9. Organizing storage area
  10. Operate room sound systems (See also IMP Stations / Soundsystems)
  11. Full IMP Stations
  12. Lite IMP Stations
  13. Cable length colors
  14. Mic cable specific use and storage location
  15. Keys and access
  16. Walkie talkie codes and communications
  17. Ballroom AV rack operation, shutdown, video mute.
  18. Login and operation of tech computer.
  19. Storage location of Handy Herman personnel lift
  20. Location of gaff tape
  21. Location of new and old batteries
    • Why do we save “old” batteries?
  22. Changing batteries in wireless
  23. Wireless mics, operations, and setting in rooms- on podium or mic stand.

Five (5) Semesters

Advanced Equipment and Concepts

  1. All of semester four.
  2. Using Phase Reverse
  3. Using compressor/limiters for dynamically wide audio signals and background music
  4. Projector settings and adjustments
  5. Signal Flow
  6. Creating recording outputs
  7. Connecting Small and Large sound systems into one system
  8. Audio equalization and basic audio mixing/production
