Asking Questions Using Prepositions In English it is common to "dangle" prepositions when asking questions. One rarely would say For whom are you waiting? (considered more grammatical) We more naturally say Who are you waiting for?, even though "Who" is the object of the preposition. German never dangles prepositions. Auf wen warten Sie? corresponds to the first example in English above, and is the only way to express this question in German. Keep the case in mind: Vor wem hast du Angst? (Who are you afraid of?) The "who" or "whom" in German after a preposition is either accusative wen or dative wem. Übung 7-2b: Einige Fragen. Pretend that you did not hear what the person below said. You respond with a question. For example: Ich warte auf meinen Freund. (I am waiting for my friend.) → Auf wen wartest du? (Who are you waiting for?) Ich habe Angst vor dem Lehrer. German has a special construction for such questions about things. German does NOT use pronouns (es, ihn, ihm, ihr, sie) Instead, German uses the Wo-compound. The particle wo is added to the preposition and corresponds to the English "what": womit? = with what? wofür? = for what? For prepositions that begin with a vowel, an "r" is added between wo and the preposition: woran? = on what? worüber = about what? Übung 7-2c: Einige Fragen.
