Welcome to the wonderful world of SCUBA diving!

Thousands are learning SCUBA and enjoying the sport around the world.

• SCUBA allows you to explore new realms, environments and terrain under water.
• SCUBA is a great learning experience, where students gain knowledge in areas such as physics, physiology, nature, even history, and interpersonal relations.
• SCUBA is both exciting and relaxing!

The Certification classes provide you with the knowledge and skills to safely enjoy SCUBA diving.

The BU Scuba Club offers basic SCUBA classes spring and fall semester, depending on conditions, and are open to BU students and to the BU community.

Here are some of the details:

• Course Length: A minimum of 14 hours of classroom sessions and academic study, a minimum of 12 hours of pool training and five open water training dives.

• Class Size: Maximum of six to a class with one instructor; more with necessary teaching assistants (assistant instructors and divemasters).

• Eligibility: BU students have priority. Employees at BU and members of the local community may enroll when seats are available.

• Age Requirement: Minimum of 18 years of age. No maximum age, but good general health is required.

• Swimming Ability: It is more important just to feel comfortable in the water than to be a strong swimmer.

• Required Equipment:
  • Students should bring a notebook and pen for the introductory classroom session.
  • Students will need to purchase the textbook and instructional video.

  • We encourage students to purchase their own:
    1. mask
    2. adjustable fins
    3. neoprene boots

Students must use ONLY gear acquired under the guidance of the SCUBA instructor.

The BU Scuba Club has gear to loan, although it is always better to purchase these items new.

The BU Scuba Club provides scuba gear for pool and open-water training, which includes tanks, regulators, gauges, buoyancy compensator, environmental suit, and weight belt.

Owning your own equipment is highly recommended.
The Scuba Club can advise new divers regarding the purchase of equipment.

The certifying agency is the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI). Their motto is "Dive Safety through Education".
