Modern World History Spring 2002 Sections 03 and 03
Directions for using the "Blackboard" On-Line Discussion Board.

_____
Introduction
I have set up a "discussion board" for this class at http://cde.sshe.edu:8082
Think of this discussion board as an extension of the classroom. You
can use it to ask (or answer) questions about the course, the syllabus, reading assignments,
lectures, exams-- anything related to this class--and you can ask 24 hours a day
7 days a week..
The discussion board allows you to read answers to your own questions and also to read and comment on questions and answers from and to other students.
It also allows you to remain anonymous if you wish.
Please be polite and use language that would be acceptable in a classroom setting.
I will try to answer all of your questions as best as I can. I will post answers at least once a day during week days. I may also post some responses over the weekends.
You have to "register" to use the discussion board. Setting up your account requires a few simple steps, explained below.
(My thanks to Professor Mary Nicholson of the Bloomsburg University IT
program for allowing me to modify her handouts of instructions for using
Blackboard)
________
STEP ONE
The
first thing you need to do is create an account on the Center for Distance
Education (CDE) server site. Once
you have this account, you will use your username and password to access all
courses available through the CDE.
· You only need to complete the fields in the Personal Information and Account section.
· For the user name and password, I recommend choosing a short, easy to remember word with no spaces or capital letters.
· Be sure to remember your user name and password! You will be using those each time you login to Blackboard.
_______
STEP TWO
Next,
you must "enroll" in the Modern World course hosted on the CDE site.
You will first login, then search the Course Catalog for the course, and finally
enroll.
Very
important! The
last step for enrolling is to enter an access code.
The
access code for our course is the word: Modern
___________
STEP THREE
When you first "enter" the Modern World History course site, you will see an announcement welcoming you and explaining the function of the discussion board.
One the left of the screen, you will see a menu with the following categories:
Announcements
Discussion Board
External Links (this has links back to my home page and to the course syllabus--you can use it to quickly return to the syllabus if you need to!)
If you click on Discussion Board, you will see any existing "forums" [categories of questions or discussion topics] that have been posted.
You can click on an existing forum in order to read the questions and answers that have already been posted. You can contribute a new question or comment to this thread by clicking the button that says "Add New Thread."
Then type in your question or comment and hit the button that says "submit."
e-mail me if you have any problems with this! hickey@planetx.bloomu.edu or hickey@bloomu.edu
