MODERN WORLD SPRING 2002  EXAM 3

Your sections voted to divide the test into an in-class portion and a take-home portion.  You will take the in-class portion of the exam on 9 April.  The take-home portion will be due on 11 April.

The in-class portion of the test (parts a and b--together worth 50% of the exam grade) will be a combination of multiple choice, true-false, and matching questions, based upon the study questions on the lectures and on the Bulliet textbook (linked to your syllabus).  I have provided you with a "short-list" of twelve questions (see below), which I have modified slightly.  I will write multiple choice (etc.) format questions on the basis of these.

The take-home portion of the text (part c--worth 50% of the exam grade) is an essay.  Follow the directions for Part C on this page (below).

PART A:  Questions from the lectures:

1) In both Second Empire France and Imperial Germany, fundamentally authoritarian governments used a combination of repression and reform to maintain conservative stability and make themselves seem "legitimate" in the eyes of the public, despite the absence of real democracy.  What types of policies did these two regimes follow in common?  Give specific examples.

2) What factors seem to have made Japan better able than China to respond to the western challenge in the 1800s?

3)  What economic, cultural, and political causes of imperialism did people discuss in the late 1800s and early 1900s, and in what ways did imperialism contribute to tensions between the great powers of Europe?

4) What combination of factors were causes of (or contributed to) the outbreak of World War One?

5) What political and economic factors allowed Hitler to come to power in Germany?

6) What were the basic aims (goals) of Nazi policy toward the economy, ethnic minorities and Jews, and foreign policy?

PART B:  Questions on the Bulliet textbook:

1) From ch. 22:  What were the Tanzimat reforms and why were the Ottoman Empire’s rulers trying to secularize and modernize their society?

2) From ch. 23: What were Karl Marx’s main criticisms of capitalism and what political conclusion did he draw from these criticisms? In contrast, how did labor unions hope to reduce the burdens of capitalism on the working class? How did universal male suffrage effect the strategy of the socialist and labor movements?

3) From ch. 23:  Did nationalism effectively unify society in all of the great European states? Give examples of where nationalism had a unifying effect and examples of where it led to greater social divisions.

4) From ch. 24:  What basic patterns distinguished European conquest and rule in Egypt, Western Africa, Equatorial Africa, and Southern Africa? What were the most common political and social consequences and social responses to European imperialism in Africa? (In particular, be ready to use the document on page 508 as evidence related to this question.)

5) From ch. 25:  How did the Bolshevik (Communist) Party hold on to power after it seized power in fall 1917? What sort of policies did they institute after they had secured power by winning the Russian Civil War?

6) From ch. 25:   What (similar and different) economic policies were implemented by the USSR, Nazi Germany, and Japan during the Great Depression of the 1930s.

PART C:  On Klemperer, I Will Bear Witness.

STEP ONE:  READ THE STUDY QUESTIONS ON THIS BOOK at this link.  Choose ONE of the study questions.  That will be your exam question.

STEP TWO:  Read the diary!  Remember the advice that I gave you in class about reading the diary...

STEP THREE:  Write an essay that answers your chosen questions.  Follow these directions:

a) Pick one and only one of the questions.  Again, ANSWER ONLY ONE of these questions!

b) Be sure that you understand exactly what the question is asking!

c) Write a paper that is at least 3 pages long (double spaced, 12 point font, 1 inch margins), not counting the works cited page.  (Put your name at the very top on the first page, number all the pages, and be sure to staple the paper in the top left corner.)   Start the paper at the TOP of the page (DO NOT SKIP SEVERAL LINES at the top of the page!!!), and indent 5 spaces to start a new paragraph (DO NOT skip lines between paragraphs!!!!).  I want at least 3 pages of your answer, so don't screw around with things that pad the length.

d) Your paper must have an introductory paragraph that introduces the question and states your thesis (the main point of your answer).

e) You must divide the body of your paper into a series of paragraphs, with each paragraph explaining one of the main ideas of your paper.  (Example--if you can sub-divide your main point into 5 sub-points, then your paper would have an introduction, five body paragraphs, and then a conclusion.)

f) Every paragraph must have a topic sentence that states or introduces that main idea of that paragraph.  Every paragraph must include specific evidence/ examples (plural!) that prove (or illustrate) the paragraph’s main points.  Every example must be followed by an explanation that makes clear to the reader what the example tells us in relation to the paragraph’s main point.  If possible, each paragraph should end with a transition sentence that leads the reader into the next paragraph.

g) Your main points must be supported/ illustrated/ defended with evidence from the DiaryIf you quote, you MUST PUT THE QUOTED MATERIAL IN QUOTATION MARKS!  If you paraphrase, it must be in YOUR own words.  (See the linked guide to quoting, etc., in the on-line syllabus.)

h) EVERY time you use a quotation, you must indicate the source of that quotation.  IT IS FINE WITH ME IF YOU USE PARENTHETICAL NOTES.  Every time you paraphrase or take an example out of a specific passage or page of the Autobiography, you must indicate the source of that information with a note.  (See the linked guide to parenthetical notes, etc., in the on-line syllabus.)

i) Your paper must end with a concluding paragraph that restates your main point.

j) PROOFREAD AND EDIT your paper before turning it in!  This take home exam part of the exam is worth 1/2 the exam grade (that means 15% of your total grade)!!!  Do the best job you can; give yourself plenty of time, and PROOFREAD AND EDIT your paper before turning it in!
