FINAL EXAM Outline

  1. Listening: You will hear four words spelled out using the German pronunciation of the letters of the alphabet. Write down the words you hear spelled out.

  2. Listening: Numbers to 100. Fill in the blanks in the narrative below with the numbers spoken.

  3. Listening: Richtig oder Falsch? Mark the statements either true (richtig) or false (falsch) based on the passage you hear. This passage is based on the dialogue in chapter 4.

  4. Listening: Logische Antworte. You will hear five questions. Below are three replies for each question. Check the reply that makes sense. You do not have the questions, but here are the possible answers:
    1. ______ a. Grüß dich. ______ b. Ja, gern. ______ c. Nichts Besonderes.
    2. ______ a. Ja, ich kenne das. ______ b. Das ist nett. ______ c. Ja, heute Nachmittag.
    3. ______ a. Gehen Sie doch in den Supermarkt. ______ b. Nein, ich habe jetzt keine Zeit. ______ c. Nein, mein Hauptfach ist Chemie.
    4. ______ a. Die Universität. ______ b. Ferien. ______ c. Geld.
    5. ______ a. Kunstgeschichte. ______ b. Das Seminar. ______ c. Die Klausur.

  5. Heino und Frau Müller: Complete the dialogue by inserting the German words and phrases as indicated in English in the parentheses. This is based on the first slide of the power point review for the final, which is posted on BOLT.

  6. Ein Schlafzimmer: In the room pictured below, label five items and give the correct definite article: der Fußball. Then write as sentence for each item that states either its color or that it is new, old, pretty, large or small. Do not repeat the adjectives: "Der Fußball ist orange." Do not use this color. This is based on the image in the textbook on page 17.

  7. Weather: Based on the weather map, state the weather in four German cities. Use one sentence for the general weather description and a second sentence for the temperature. This is the same as test 2.

  8. Nations and Nationalities: State where three of these people are from and state the nationalities of each person below based on the country they are from. Example: Kristof kommt aus Polen. Er ist Pole. Watch gender markers! Mara kommt aus Polen. Sie ist Polin. Match the person correctly with the country indicated by the arrow. The names of the countries are listed. This is the same as test 2.

    The following sections are mostly variations of exercises on tests 3 and 4.

  9. Was essen Emily und Jessica? Charlotte and Simon are preparing for a visit from Emily and Jessica. Complete their conversation with the appropriate form of each verb in parentheses. This tests using verbs essen, geben, nehmen.

  10. Wissen oder kennen? Complete each sentence with the appropriate form of wissen or kennen.

  11. Einkaufen: Tell about Charlotte's shopping trip by forming sentences using the cues. Pay special attention to the word order (time before place). Know how to use the verb "gehen" and time-place word order. Example: Sie geht am Samstag zur Drogerie.

  12. Im türkischen Laden: Charlotte and Simon arrive at Özmir's store right before closing time. Charlotte gets a little nervous because they have some more shopping to do. Construct imperative sentences addressing the persons indicated, using the cues provided. Example: (to Simon) fragen / nicht / so viel --> Frag nicht so viel. Note how the formal command works, which is different. If addressed to Herrn Özmir, he would say "Fragen Sie nicht so viel!"

  13. Wir haben alles: Say that everyone has her/his things. Use possessive adjectives. Example: Nils hat sein Handy. (n.) Note: every thing is the object of the sentence.

  14. Präpositionen. Ein Abendessen: Felix is inviting Theo for dinner. Complete their conversation with the appropriate prepositions durch, für, gegen, ohne, um.

  15. Wen findest du nett? Anna and Fabian are discussing friends. Complete the sentences with appropriate accusative pronouns (mich, dich, sie, ihn, uns, sie).

  16. Pronomen. Hannas Party: Hanna is discussing her party. Answer the questions, using a pronoun. For example: Daniel: Hanna, brauchst du eigentlich meinen CD-Player (m.)? Hanna: Nein, ich brauche ihn nicht.

  17. Viele Verben: Complete each sentence with the appropriate form of the verb in parentheses. Example: Im August wird (werden) Michael 21 Jahre alt.

  18. Besuch am Wochenende: Complete the sentences with the past tense of haben.

  19. Modalverben: Create sentences from the elements given. Use the appropriate form of the modal verb, making sure that the word order is correct for sentences with modal verbs.

  20. Familie: Write a description of the following two people based on the information given. Write in German in complete sentences, what the person's name is, how old that person is, what that person does as a profession, etc. Create a sentence for every item of information. This material is from the class presentations.

  21. Food groups: List two food and drink items that fit in the following food groups: das Obst, das Gemüse, das Fleisch, das Gebäck, die Getränke. Include the correct article die, das, der.
