Course Description:
Computer Applications for
Professional Communicators is designed to introduce students to the exciting
area of computers used in the field of communication. The objectives of the
course include:
ˇ Students will demonstrate proficiency in word processing by using Microsoft Word including the creation of a Résumé and Cover Letter.
ˇ Students will learn desktop-publishing skills by using Adobe PageMaker and Microsoft Publisher.
ˇ Students will become familiar with Internet components such as email, IM, chat, iPods, and web cams.
ˇ Students will learn how to prepare and deliver a multimedia presentation by using Microsoft PowerPoint.
ˇ Students will create an Internet web site using Microsoft FrontPage.
ˇ Students will understand the historical context of the development of the Internet and related digital communication technologies and their impact on society and culture.
COURSE MATERIALS:
ˇ A disk for saving your assignments. Use a flash drive !!!!! If you don't have one, it is time to get one!!!!!
ˇ
You will need an e-mail account.
If you do not have an e-mail account, you can obtain an account (a free e-mail
account)
from Academic Computing (Ben Franklin Building). Make sure you know
your login name and your password by the 2nd
session of class.
You will need an account to be able to construct your website for the FrontPage
assignment.
ˇ Students are required to become familiar with materials on the Technology Research page on this website - located at:
http://facstaff.bloomu.edu/jtomlins/technolg.htm
ˇ Additional course material will be accessible via the Internet.
ATTENDANCE: Students are expected to be
on-time for all classes. Late arrivals will interrupt the
flow of the class and the discussion/exercises being conducted. Only one
unexcused absence will be
allowed.
GRADING:
15% of your grade will be: Assignment 1: Résumé and Cover Letter
20% of your grade will be: Assignment 2: PowerPoint Presentation
25% of your grade will be: Assignment 3: Newsletter
25% of your grade will be: Assignment 4 Internet Website
5% of your grade will be: Class Participation
10% of your grade will be: Final Examination

Additional Class Information
Assignment 1: Word Processing
Each student will prepare a
professional quality Resume and Cover letter which will be submitted
to your instructor for grading.
Assignment 2: PowerPoint
Each student will prepare a
PowerPoint presentation. Plan a 5 - 8 minute presentation - remember, you are being evaluated for: speaking skills, organization, delivery, content, and the preparation and presentation of your PowerPoint.
Assignment 3: Newsletter
Each student will prepare a
professional quality newsletter for a fictional organization. Newsletters
must include at least 4 pages, and
include the following: at least one picture, at least one clipart which
you have
re colored or edited, good
basic design skills - such as readability, proper grammar and spelling,
effective use
of fonts (including sizing), and use
of consistent and complimentary color schemes. You will send your finished
newsletter to your instructor (jtomlins@bloomu.edu),
as an email attachment.
Assignment 4: Web Page Design
Each student will create a personal
web page containing several specific elements - refer to the
handouts available in class.
Class Participation: You are expected to be
present for all class sessions and to participate actively in
discussions with the instructor and
