Laboratory Work Schedule and Instructions
for Fall 2008
Listed below you will find a work schedule for the fruit fly experiment, instructions for the laboratory report format, and a schedule of experiments and report due dates for completed experiments.
The Drosophila Experiment: Proposed Work Schedule for Exercise 1--Fall 2008
| 03, 05 September | Receive Stocks. Learn to sex the flies. |
| 10, 12 September | Set up a new culture of each stock. Cross the two stocks--do the IA and IB crosses. |
| 24, 26 September | Remove the parents from the IA and IB crosses. Discard the original stock bottles. |
| 01, 03 October | Examine the F1 of the IA and IB crosses. |
| 08, 09 October | Set up two bottles of F1 x F1 selfs. Each team submits one F1 report by 5 PM on 17 October. |
| 15, 17 October | Remove the F1 parents from the IA and IB bottles. Wait one day and begin scoring the F2 of the IA and IB crosses. Be certain that you are observing all the F2 phenotypes correctly. |
| 29, 31 October | Finish scoring the F2 and prepare data tables. |
| 05, 07 November | Each team prepares an F2 report and submits the report by 5 PM on 14 November. Discuss the male parent backcross and its analysis. Each team receives MPBC data after the F2 report has been approved. |
| 12, 14 November | Discuss the female parent backcross and its analysis. Each team receives FPBC data after reporting on the MPBC analysis. |
The final Drosophila report is due on 25 November by 5 PM.
You are responsible for maintaining your stocks. You are also completely responsible for the timing of your crosses. You are provided with ample time and supplies to successfully complete the experiment within the allotted time.
Format for the Laboratory Exercises
Title Page:
The title of the exercise must be placed in the middle of the page and centered. Your name must be placed under this. In the lower right-hand side, you must place the names of all team members, the course and section numbers, and the date.
The Body:
A short general introduction including the purpose of each exercise must be typed double-spaced. This introduction must not exceed one page. The data section follows this. Finally, the answers to the background and analytical questions must be given. Type out each question, and then give the answer. Use a simple font with a 10 to 12 point size. Margins must be one inch on the top, bottom, and sides.
References:
If you used your text, your manual, or other sources in answering the background or the analytical questions, you must cite the source. Use standard formats as presented in A Short Guide to Writing About Biology or the name-year format presented in the CBE Style Manual. Failure to cite sources is plagiarism and appropriate penalties will be applied.
